"End of the Walk"

Horizons tinged with silver light
And purring cars just out of sight
Tell us that we ran out the clock,
That we have seen the end of night.

Our legs are aching as we walk;
With dried-out throats, we talk and talk;
It’s cold enough to make us shake;
We don’t keep score, we don’t take stock.

We went for one another’s sake
To give ourselves a little break,
But stars came up and stars came down
And even now are we awake.

I cannot bring myself to frown,
Though it might feel like I’ll drown;
I’m tired, but my soul’s in flight
When you and I go stroll the town.
